The S K Josefsberg Studio is pleased to present the photogravures of
Peter Miller, on view at the gallery June 6 - July 13, 2002.

Akin to the filigree nature of traditional Chinese ink drawings, Peter Miller's photogravures of Japan and the Silk Road characterize an idyllic Orient.

In 1989 Peter Miller was introduced to the work of American artist Peter Henry Emerson. The images of the 19th Century printer made a powerful impression on Miller, profound enough to inspire him to build a personal workshop where in he could explore the antiquated process of photogravure. Having no mentor, Miller learned the gravure printing process by simple trial and error. At the end of his first year he had produced enough pieces for his first exhibition. The inherent nature of the antiquated process coupled with soft toothed papers enhances the atmospheric calm of Miller's landscapes.

Over the last decade Peter Miller's photogravures have been exhibited throughout Japan and the United States, as well as England and Germany. Such esteemed institutions as the National Museum of American Art, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Kamakura Museum of Modern Art, the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian, and the Cleveland Museum of Art have acquired prints for their permanent collections.

Born in Pittsburgh in the 1950's, Peter Miller is a graduate of Columbia College who initially made his living in Silicon Valley in the 1970's. It was his background in finance and semiconductors which drew him to Tokyo in the 1980's. He has lived in Japan ever since and currently resides in Kamakura.
