MIYAKO ISHIUCHI
Miyako Ishiuchi was born in 1947 in Gunma Prefecture. And
grew up in
Yokosuka. She was a weaving major at Tama Art University but
left before
completing her degree in 1970. She is now recognized as one of
Japanšs
pioneering woman photographers. A prize-winning photographer
since she began practicing her craft in the 1970s, Miyako
Ishiuchi has had an interest in body parts that began to
blossom in the late 1980s. Her body of work
'Nails' is of men's fingers and toenails and denotes her
interest in the way
that the bitten and mangled nails express the psychological
state of her
male subjects drawn from all races and walks of life.
