KAZUO KITAI
Kitai was born in China in 1944. He studied art at Nihon University in Tokyo, from which he graduated in 1965. In the 1970’s, Kitai traveled throughout the Nihon province documenting vanishing livelihoods and customs of everyday life. It was the time of mass industrialization in Japan and the remote regions were slowly being swallowed and transformed by the installation of mechanisms and restructuring the landscape with concrete and other fortified materials of contemporanea. The climate and the simplicity of life is gone and what remains is Kitai’s document of how it was “before…”
