Jerome Hart
July 18 – August 30, 2003

The S K Josefsberg Studio is pleased to present the work of Portland photographer  Jerome Hart, on view at the gallery July 18 – August 30, 2003.

This exhibition of Jerome Hart’s palladium prints is a survey of his artistic endeavors since 1994. Working as a commercial photographer for more than 25 years, his personal creative vision jelled when he began working in the platinum/palladium process a decade ago. The antiquated process has had a revival in recent years—its warm sepia pallet (due to the level of palladium) is alluring for its classic character. Hart shoots primarily with 35mm for his palladium prints, as it affords greater texture when pushed to larger print formats.

My ambition is to reproduce a sense of what I feel rather than what I see when exposing the film. These images are photographs of light, not necessarily of the subject. I feel exhilarated by the light and delighted when I am able to communicate this with my camera. As a print maker, the palladium process has allowed me to give voice to the light.

—Jerome Hart

Born in Illinois, Jerome Hart spent much of his childhood in Madison, Wisconsin where he had the opportunity to indulge in the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright. His studies in photography began at the University of Wisconsin. After two years, however, he left the University to join the Peace Corps. Hart spent two and a half years with the Corps, working primarily in Somalia and Ethiopia. At the end of his service he was drafted and served in the US Army for two years. Relieved of his duty, he returned to academia and was awarded a Bachelors of Professional Arts degree from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. Moving then to Portland, Oregon, Hart opened his commercial photography business in 1975. Jerome Hart Photography continues to thrive and in June 2000 many of his images were published in Wildwood: Cooking from the Source in the Pacific Northwest by Portland chef Cory Schreiber.
