Eckhard Hahnel
July 19 August 24, 2001
Eckhard Hahnel was born in Dresden, Germany in 1935. Almost nothing is known of his childhood during the war wretched years of WWII. What we have instead is a legacy of imagery illustrating the life of the young, blue collar class in Germany during the mid-1950's. They are familiar moments of youth, filled with love, hope, friendship and adventure.
Hahnel immigrated to the United States in the fall of 1956, settling in Eugene, Oregon. There he married, started a family and made his way as a mason. Tragically, in 1961, he and his wife were killed in a fatal car accident before their daughter had reached her 4th birthday.
The prints in this exhibition were made by Hahnel's daughter who now lives in Portland. She discovered the negatives along with his diary, rummaging through an old box of family photos in 1993. For her it was a major discovery; a window into her father's lifea life she never really knew.
We are pleased to exhibit this small body of work as a historical document of the life and times of post-war Germany. It is an intimate view of a culture and time rarely spoken of, but not surprisingly, no different than our own. This work attests to the timelessness, wonderment and hope of youth, which has no borders.
