The S K Josefsberg Studio is pleased to present the work of photographer
Larry Fink, on view at the gallery February 28 - April 13, 2002.
A practitioner of the "snapshot aesthetic", Larry Fink is catalogued with the esteemed ranks of Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand. He first picked up the camera at the age of thirteen. He found that taking pictures laxed the inhibitions of introduction, making social interactions a thing of ease. Amid the crowd, rather than outside it, Fink is not a voyeur, but rather his work speaks a visual vernacular. The results of his tutelage with Lisette Model is that his pictures tend to expose the flaws in the polished façades we all present in the public arena. Fink's images often display the sensitive core of interpersonal-relationships, prevalent despite social posturing, whether mingled among unctuous characters at a high-society benefit or a down-home potluck setting of family.
Larry Fink's work has been exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and
abroad—venues have included: MoMA, The Whitney, SFMoMa, The Louvre and Les Rencontres de Photographie in Arles, France. His work is in the collections of MoMA, New York; Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Whitney Museum, New York and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris among others. As well Fink is a two-time National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, plus a recipient of the esteemed Guggenheim fellowship.
Currently a professor at Bard College, New York , Fink has held positions at Yale, Parsons School of Design, and New York University. His current work regularly appears in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Detour, to name a few.
Social Graces, Fink's most renown book which glimpses into the world of highfaluted metropolitan soirées as well as the two-by-four simplicity of rural life, was recently re-issued by Powerhouse Books, for the first time since its initial publication in 1984. Other monographs include Runway (a behind the scenes during Fashion Week) and Boxing (an intimate look outside the ring).
The fifty-five images by Larry Fink presented in this exhibition are the premise for a forthcoming publication by Phaidon Press Limited, as part of the acclaimed "55" series.
