The S K Josefsberg Studio is pleased to present the work of
Portland photographer Ron van Dongen, on view at the
gallery October 17 - November 30, 2002.
Ron
van Dongen is by far the most recognized photographer of
botanical images currently producing. His work is a gardener's
delight of enchanting and delicate floral still-lifes that
harbor a classical sensibility. There is a soft-spoken nature to
his prints, which is achieved by his use of natural lighting and
meticulous toning methods.
In addition to his ever popular floral work, the S K Josefsberg
Studio will also be exhibiting Ron van Dongen's newest
figurative series. In tune with the isolated lustre of the flora
& fauna, van Dongen's approach to the human form is akin to a
sculptor—a make-up of pure elements. In the same way that van
Dongen's photographs of flowers have surpassed traditional
still-lifes, his figurative work too breaches the current
normalacy of the nude, elevating it to an idyllic plateau.
Ron van Dongen's work has earned a place in the collections of
the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Microsoft Corporation; Polo Ralph Lauren Collection;
and the Elton John Collection. To date, van Dongen's botanical
works are featured in four stunning monographs: Alba Nero,
Vulgaris, Nudare and Rosa >Ferrus<.
Born
in Venezuela, van Dongen credits his Dutch upbringing for his
fascination and life long zealousness for plants. A heartfelt
interest in biology, van Dongen attended the Nederlandse Leraren
Opleiding in Delft acquiring degrees in Health Sciences and
Biology. In 1989, he moved to San Francisco where he revived his
scholastic endeavors. This time however he chose to focus on his
creative outlet, studying photography at the Academy of Arts
College. Under the mentorship of Roger Minick, van Dongen would
articulate his skills as a truly fine printer. Ron van Dongen
currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon, where he is able
to devote much of his time to his garden as well as his
photography.
